You may be a candidate if your foreskin is too tight to be pulled back over the tip of the penis (phimosis), which can lead to inflammation of the foreskin or the head of the penis. According to Mayo Clinic, circumcision may also be associated with easier hygiene and a lower risk of urinary tract infections, certain sexually transmitted infections, and other penile problems.

Circumcision is also performed for religious, cultural, or personal-hygiene reasons. In general, it is not thought to lessen or improve sexual pleasure, and it does not affect fertility.

Circumcision is performed in an outpatient surgical setting. The penis and surrounding area are cleansed and anesthesia is given; for teens and adults, general anesthesia — medicine that brings on a sleep-like state — may be used, depending on your specialist's recommendation.

The urologist removes the foreskin and then protects the area with an ointment, such as a topical antibiotic or petroleum jelly, and a loosely wrapped gauze dressing.

Because it is an outpatient procedure, most patients are discharged the same day and go home with clear care instructions.

Before the procedure, your specialist talks with you about the risks and benefits, answers your questions, and explains what type of anesthesia and pain management will be used. You will likely need to provide written consent.

Depending on your case, the medical team may give you additional instructions, such as fasting beforehand if general anesthesia will be used or temporarily adjusting certain medications. According to Mayo Clinic, it usually takes 7 to 10 days for the penis to heal. At first, the tip of the penis is likely to be sore, and it may look discolored, swollen, or bruised; you might also notice a small amount of yellow fluid. In adults, recovery may take somewhat longer, and your specialist will tell you when to resume your usual activities.

While the area heals, you can wash it with warm water and mild soap and gently pat it dry, following your doctor's instructions on ointments and wound care. Most patients gradually return to their daily routines.

Go to the emergency department if you develop a high fever, heavy bleeding that does not stop, pain that gets worse, difficulty urinating, or foul-smelling drainage, and notify the doctor who performed your procedure as soon as possible.
